Mining Scrapbook

Yesterday, in a story about the early mining history at Sanca, we mentioned a scrapbook we have in the archives’ collection that contains hundreds of newspaper clippings about mines and mineral strikes. It’s a fascinating collection…and one that is guaranteed to get you sidetracked for hours!

Here’s a sampling of articles from a single page:

This scrapbook is pretty fragile, so it spends most of its time safely in a box in the archives’ storage area. This week, though, we’re bringing it out and putting it on display. It will be protected by a sheet of mylar, and we’ll wipe down the mylar (as well as the table and chairs in our reading area) between each visitor so you can get close enough to it to read it without having to worry about potential contagion. Our staff are available to turn the pages if you want to see more!

it’s only on display until 4:00 PM on Saturday, though – after that it goes back into its protective box!

The Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 – 4:00, and admission is by donation.
